FlashCore Module Generations Explained: FCM1 Through FCM5
If you have ever seen an IBM part number like a FlashCore Module 4 drive and wondered whether it fits the array you already own, the short answer is: it depends entirely on which FlashCore Module generation your FlashSystem model supports. IBM has shipped five FCM generations since 2018, and each one only fits specific enclosures.
Older systems
FlashSystem 9100-family and 9200/7200/5200-family systems use the original FCM and FCM2 generations.
Recent systems
FlashSystem 9500, 7300, and 5300 moved to FCM3 and then FCM4, adding quantum-safe encryption and ransomware detection.
Current systems
The FlashSystem 5600, 7600, and 9600 use the newest FCM5 generation, which changed physical form factor entirely.
