IBM FlashCore Module Generations: FCM1 to FCM5 Compatibility Guide
Which IBM FlashSystem models support FCM, FCM2, FCM3, FCM4, and FCM5, with drive capacities, form factors, and machine types for each generation.
IBM FlashCore Module (FCM) is not one product. It is a family of five hardware generations, and the FlashSystem model a buyer owns or is quoting determines which generations are even an option. Mixing this up is one of the most common sourcing mistakes in FlashSystem buying: a valid FCM4 part number for a FlashSystem 9500 is not installable in a FlashSystem 5030, and a FlashSystem 9600 cannot take a FCM4 drive at all because the enclosure moved to a different physical form factor. The table below maps every current and recent FCM generation to the exact models that support it.

FCM4 can be intermixed with FCM3 in the same array during a model conversion, but the array runs at FCM3-level functionality until every module in the array is FCM4. IBM recommends a uniform-generation array for full performance, data reduction, and ransomware-detection behavior.
What changed generation to generation
FCM and FCM2
Debuted with the FlashSystem 9100 in 2018. Hardware-accelerated inline compression and hybrid SLC-TLC/QLC NAND. FCM2 added the 38.4 TB capacity point and broadened support across the 5100/5200/7200/9200 line.
FCM3 and FCM4
FCM4 (announced 2024) is the meaningful jump: PCIe Gen 4, quantum-safe encryption, and embedded ransomware threat detection that continuously analyzes I/O telemetry inside the module itself, not just at the array controller.
FCM5
Launched with the FlashSystem 5600, 7600, and 9600 refresh (GA March 2026). Moves to the EDSFF form factor, which is why FCM5 cannot be retrofitted into any older U.2-bay FlashSystem, including a 9500 or 7300 that is otherwise fully current.
Models that do not use FlashCore Module at all
Not every FlashSystem model is FCM-based, and treating the whole product line as one flash-media story is a common sourcing error. The FlashSystem 5030 (both the 2072-3H2 LFF and 2072-3H4 SFF control enclosures) is a SAS-based system: it takes SAS HDD and SAS flash drives through its 12-bay or 24-bay enclosure and expansion units, not NVMe FlashCore Modules. The entry FlashSystem 5015 and 5045 are hybrid SAS/NVMe systems built around standard drives rather than FCM media. Confirm the exact model and machine type before quoting FCM part numbers against any 5030, 5015, or 5045 environment.
