IBM FlashSystem Grid Architecture

What IBM FlashSystem Grid architecture is, the four components it coordinates, how it differs from the FlashSystem.ai agent that runs on top of it, and which arrays support it.

FlashSystem Grid is IBM's name for the resilience architecture introduced with the February 2026 FlashSystem portfolio. It is not a product you buy separately and it is not the AI layer. It is the design that makes immutable snapshots, replication, threat detection, and automated response behave as one coordinated system instead of four features that each need to be configured and watched independently.

The coordination is the point. Each of those four existed in some form before Grid. What changed is that detection can now trigger immutability directly, so the gap between an attack starting and a clean copy existing is measured in seconds rather than in however long it takes someone to read an alert.

Grid architecture vs FlashSystem.ai

These two get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Grid is the architecture. FlashSystem.ai is the agent that operates inside it. Grid defines what can be coordinated; the AI layer decides when to act and adapts those decisions to the environment over time.

Which arrays support Grid

Grid architecture ships with FlashCore Module Gen 5 (FCM5), which is exclusive to the current FlashSystem 5600, 7600, and 9600. Earlier arrays, including the 5300, 7300, and 9500 they replaced, do not run FCM5 and do not get Grid. This matters on a refresh quote: Grid is a reason to move to current generation, not something that can be added to installed hardware.

What Grid means for AS400 and IBM i estates

IBM i shops tend to carry a recovery model built around nightly saves and journaling, designed when the realistic threat was hardware failure rather than an attacker with valid credentials. Grid does not replace that model. What it changes is the floor: an immutable copy can exist before anyone has triaged the incident, which shortens the worst case considerably.

Grid is an architecture, not a recovery plan. It still needs save strategy, journaling, application dependencies, and host attachment decided deliberately. Treat it as the layer your plan runs on, not the plan itself.
