IBM FlashSystem 9000
Flagship FlashSystem family category for critical OLTP and large consolidation, covering the 9100, 9200, 9500, and current 9600 upgrade path.
FlashSystem 9000 is IBM's flagship storage tier. It covers the widest span of installed hardware of any FlashSystem family, from 9100 arrays that are now firmly in migration territory through to the current 9600, so the first job on any 9000-family enquiry is establishing which generation is actually on the floor.
Family members
FlashSystem 9600 ... current
Machine type 5078-A40, built on FCM5. The current flagship, introduced February 2026.
FlashSystem 9500 ... installed base
Machine type 4666-AH8. Replaced by the 9600 in February 2026 and a common refresh candidate.
FlashSystem 9200 and 9200R
The prior flagship generation, including the rack-scale 9200R configuration.
FlashSystem 9100 ... legacy
Earlier flagship hardware, now typically a migration-planning conversation.
Adjacent families buyers confuse with the 9000
Searches for the 9000 series regularly surface the A9000 and A9000R, which came from a different lineage and are not part of the 9100-to-9600 progression, and the V9000, which predates the FlashSystem naming used today. If a buyer names one of those, treat it as a separate installed-base conversation rather than a 9000-series refresh.
Before quoting a 9000-family answer, confirm the exact model and whether replication scope, Safeguarded Copy, and a second site are part of the requirement. At this tier those decisions move the price more than raw capacity does.
